Reform’s £72m donations ‘entirely in line with law’, Jenrick says

September 15, 2026 2 min read

Robert Jenrick has defended massive financial contributions made to Reform UK, insisting that seventy two million pounds in donations from two cryptocurrency billionaires are entirely legal. Speaking on the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, the party’s economic spokesman addressed funds provided by Ben Delo and Christopher Harborne, who each contributed thirty six million pounds over a span of just two days. These sums now represent some of the largest single donations ever recorded for a UK political party.

The controversy centers on the government’s current efforts to tighten rules regarding donations from British expatriates. New proposals within the Representation of the People Bill suggest a one hundred thousand pound cap on such gifts, potentially backdated to late March. While critics argue these moves aim to curb foreign influence, Jenrick dismissed concerns that Reform would have to return the money. He noted that Ben Delo has already moved back to the UK specifically to ensure his compliance with evolving regulations.

Jenrick suggested that Housing Secretary Angela Rayner and her government might be attempting to shift the goalposts specifically to hinder Reform’s funding capabilities. He emphasized that the donors were not seeking favors but were simply supporting the party’s broader ideological agenda. This clash highlights a growing tension between emerging wealth in the digital asset space and traditional electoral finance laws designed for a different era.

For her part, Angela Rayner declined to comment on the specific circumstances surrounding Delo and Harborne, stating she was unaware of their personal details. She maintained that the legislative changes were based on recommendations from a review conducted by former civil servant Philip Rycroft and intended to safeguard British democracy. As the bill continues its journey through Parliament toward scrutiny in the House of Lords, both sides remain locked in a dispute over where legitimate support ends and undue influence begins.
