CNBC Daily Open: Sanctions, strikes and the road to $100 oil

September 9, 2026 2 min read

Global energy markets are on edge this week as escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran push oil prices dangerously close to the century mark. Despite official claims that the United States intends to rely primarily on economic leverage to resolve the conflict, recent military actions suggest a far more volatile reality. U.S. Central Command recently reported the destruction of five Iranian crude carriers following two separate attempts by Tehran to target American warships, while the Treasury Department further tightened the screws by sanctioning 27 Iranian airlines.

These developments have sent ripples through the commodities market, with West Texas Intermediate futures climbing toward ninety four dollars and international benchmark Brent flirting with one hundred dollars per barrel. With fighting persisting in the Strait of Hormuz for over six months now, investors fear that supply disruptions could become permanent fixtures of the geopolitical landscape, keeping upward pressure on fuel costs worldwide.

Beyond the Middle East, North America is facing its own set of frictions as a deepening trade rift between Canada and the United States takes a concrete turn. Retaliatory tariffs totaling roughly twenty billion dollars went into effect Tuesday after diplomatic talks completely collapsed last month. This tit-for-tat economic warfare includes heavy duties on everything from Canadian wine to hockey sticks, signaling a period of instability for cross border commerce among two traditionally close allies.

Providing a rare bright spot in an otherwise tense global climate, the technology sector saw a significant surge driven by new artificial intelligence partnerships. Semiconductor giant Qualcomm revealed a massive data center infrastructure deal with Amazon Web Services involving a four billion dollar investment warrant, while glass manufacturer Corning partnered with Verizon to expand fiber optic connectivity for AI needs. These announcements sparked a broad rally across chipmakers like Intel and AMD, proving that corporate optimism in AI remains resilient even amidst growing international turmoil.
